We are excited to announce that we have acquired a new foodshare source from J & J distributing! This is a St. Paul wholesaler that provides fresh fruits and vegetables to grocery stores. Due to their support we are now able to drop off food to an additional site in North Minneapolis. Additionally, North Country Food Alliance has been picking up leftover CSA shares from Oxendale Market in South Minneapolis and from Harmony Valley Farm CSA. CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) are farms from which customers sign up for a seasonal share and pick up boxes of fresh produce at local retailers. However, every week there are several boxes leftover because people can't always pick up their shares. So now those boxes are coming to us and being distributed to soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Deepest gratitude to all our suppliers!
The community gardens are overflowing with kale, collards, greens, chard, squash, cucumbers, and more! We have been regularly harvesting these vegetables to share for free in low-income communities. Our Midway Garden has been practically picked clean, so we transplanted some basil into the bare soil (as pictured below.) We also planted some seeds for a fall harvest: kale, collards, spinach, and cabbage. These cold-hardy veggies will keep producing late into fall (provided of course that the weather cooperates!)
Foraging classes will be held on a monthly basis across the Twin Cities. This Sunday, June 29th, we have a Very Berry Urban Foraging class taking place in south Minneapolis. There are still a couple spots remaining, so register today to take part in this unique offering!
We have also scheduled a Where the Wild Teas Are workshop for Tuesday, July 29th. We will explore an oak-savanna ecosystem along the Mississippi River and learn about the edible and medicinal plants that grow there.
See you in the woods!
Spring is an amazing time to head to the woods and forage greens, flowers, and mushrooms! For an interesting article and great recipes, check out the Grand Traverse Scene magazine, produced in northwest Michigan. This issue includes NCFA Foraging Coordinator Maria Wesserle! Tonight we held a dinner at the NCFA office to put a new Board of Directors in power. The original founding board resigned and new members stepped in to fill their places. Welcome to NCFA!

Spring is finally arriving after a long and cold winter, and with it begin foraging classes from the North Country Food Alliance! Classes will occur twice monthly starting in May. On Saturday, May 3 and May 17 there will be garlic mustard cooking classes held in partnership with the Minneapolis Parks Department. Garlic mustard is an invasive plant that threatens the woodland ecosystems of eastern North America. Attend a garlic mustard pull held by the Friends of the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden to help manage this plant first, learning proper identification and harvesting techniques. Then join us in the kitchen as we transform it into a delicious and healthful meal!

On March 1, 2013 the IWW Sisters' Camelot Canvass Union went on strike to stand up to bosses who refused to negotiate with the worker's union.
The IWW SCCU is still on strike & many of them moved forward to create the greatest worker-run nonprofit in the universe: North Country Food Alliance.
On the one-year anniversary of the strike we are having a dance party with DJ Pleasure Principle.
Sliding scale donations will be accepted and all proceeds will be split between the Twin Cities IWW & North Country Food Alliance.
Come dance the night away and celebrate the workers' victory over corrupt bosses!
Event will be held at 2440 Chicago Ave S, Minneapolis. Starts at 9pm, ends late.
